something about that implicit sense that this definition does in me, so maybe this gap btw metaphysical/theoretical attitudes and more pracmatic engineering attitudes, they want to connect. like neurons.
that is want i often experience in the popupschool.
Yes. It makes science cool again, without making claims about science that is not true. For example, Ohms law desdribes electric current as if it were a flow like water through a pipe. It relies on that powerful interaction metaphor, and leads to our capacity to take actions that are predictable. But electrons don't actually move through wires like water through pipes.
The definition initially made my mind image a place at the shore, a passing but dangerous because of the tide that can close you off. But with a safe outcome predicted by a theory i can take action. Action at the right time (the protocol?). In this case "just" for fun but nonetheless action.
Not sure how the theory works. Looking it up it seems to be more a mix of gravitational forces theories + localized tidal data + local geography. But we have tables now that show us the times :)
But somehow this example tries to make sense feels a bit weird. In my example the action protocols, going through the passing at the right time is safe because the theory predicts it.Maybe this is just a clumsy example.
Another one that came was about our touchscreens and how they stop working with cloves. anyway :)
Someone once said "an airplane is a theory wrapped in aluminum"
People forget how much the theory develops through iterative learning. Like the way Elon allows the theory to do 80% of the work, then sends up the rocket even though he is pretty sure it will blow up. Because the blowing up gives him the data that completes the final 20% of the theory.
> Science can generate protocols to take actions that lead to the outcomes predicted by the theory
This somehow makes science alive, exciting and cool. Generous and helpful it is!.

the impulse came from reading https://substack.com/@meaningness/note/c-80020406?r=1b3ie
Yup. we are back again to "adequate participation"
A good theory requires adequate participation.
